T-Mobile Advert: Capturing the Spirit of the People at Trafalgar Square

‘T-Mobile - Trafalgar Square ad was made as a follow up to T-Mobile’s last Liverpool Street Station flash mob ad. The ad kicks off with people of all races and colours joining in for a mass karaoke program being held at the Trafalgar Square in central London, England. There are high school kids, people running for offices and even children sitting on the top of their fathers’ shoulders, all singing to the famous tune “Hey Jude” by The Beatles. The lyrics are being displayed on a huge screen that has been put right in the middle of the square for everyone to see and read.

The ad starts with a bunch of high school girls playing and random shots of people asking the public present around to join in the campaign. What is noticeable is the spirit of the people who are more than willing and happy to be a part of the mass singing gathering. The camera shots are mostly of random people singing in small but many groups. However, this is not an advert for a karaoke game like SingStar - Pop Edition PS3, but rather a way to show how T-Mobile unifies people and keeps them happily connected. Most of us can also notice the presence of the famous international artiste “Pink” also singing with the general crowd. The ad ends with camera zooming out on the 13,000 plus people with more than 2000 microphones present for this campaign. The end is almost euphoric and can easily be called as one of the nicest “feel good” ads of the recent times.

The ad cannot be categorised in any particular genre as such but is definitely a campaign which requires a lot of innovative thinking and coordination. All in all, this is a brilliant and thoughtful piece of advertisement.
