Killzone 2 Advert: Short but Sweet

Killzone 2 is an entertaining video game with an extraordinary gun and grenade war interface with the enemy supported with remarkable graphics. If one views it just as a game, it is certainly complete excitement; however, if you judge it on factors like pacing, level design, story and setting, it does not rate too well. There are areas of improvement which if worked upon in the Killzone 3 can go a long way in making the game a great seller.

The extremely short 9 second Killzone 2 advert really does not convey much. There is no music, no talking, and no jokes. The ad simply begins with a brief glance at the Playstation 3 console and then we scary and dangerous characters marching in slow motion through a desolate waste land. That the advert can show and say so little, demonstrates just how hotly anticipated Killzone 2 is as a game. Many PS3 owners have already marked their calendars for the game’s release date and Sony is hoping this game alone can help reverse some of the PS3’s declining fortunes. Because nearly everyone in the know has already heard of the game, the advert simply serves a reminder to those who have forgotten about when the game is being released. With all the expectations surrounding the title, Sony need not spend more money on a long advert to build up the game’s already high hype, and therefore the choice of limiting the advert to only 9 seconds was a wise one.

As far as the game itself is concerned, Killzone 2 seems a bit ambiguous about what it exactly is. One side it is a major sci-fi story with the thrill of Gears of War 2 thrown in and the other side is a courageous action-shooter like a Call of Duty inspired game-play. The action factor includes the clever and sharp attack patterns, like in FEAR and the shooting has an overload of firing at close distances and grenade uproar as in Call of Duty. The encounter with the enemy is quite creatively done with exciting scripting tricks and boundless gunplay and grenade firing.

The level design and pacing of Killzone 2 is nothing to rave about. The Helghast and AI team players might be proficient at making smart manoeuvres and making cover fires, however, they lose out on choosing the most appropriate strategic fighting positions. But these aspects cannot take away the ecstasy of game play and the gun battles fought with Helghast’ powerful forces.

The story, script, setting and acting are of no particular significance. The scripting is poor with miserable phrases being uttered sporadically and there are no memorable and impressive characters as such.
